Leather and Vinyl Seat Repair You Can Do!
A small hole in your car seat can be a real downer. It's not worth replacing the seat or paying hundreds of dollars to have an upholstery shop work their magic, but it still bothers you every time you look at that little tab of torn material. I'm sure you've seen many of the leather and vinyl repair kits advertised, but did you know that they actually work? We've tested a few of them and found them to be adequate for repairing most small tears. Results will surely vary, but check out our experience with leather repair and decide for yourself!

Weird? We've got it!
The world of auto repair is no stranger to the wive's tale. Every mechanic has a few, and some have a whole shop full of odd pieces of advice that may or may not work. Did you know that there was a time when drivers would carry pepper to repair a radiator leak? It's true. And it worked. It might still work, although you're looking at a yucky clean-up afterward. If you know of any automotive voodoo remedies, share them with us!

The Summer Maintenance Checklist is Calling
Before you head out on a hot weather trip, be sure your car or truck is up to the task. After all, nothing turns a good day bad like jellyfish, or a side-of-the-road breakdown. If you're planning some driving trips this summer, take care of your summer maintenance before you hit the road. You'll thank yourself profusely.

Do I Need a Helmet to Weld?
Do I need a helmet to weld? This question may seem moronic to most, but I've seen plenty of guys who think the open-shut-open-shut method of trying to remember when to close your eyes is enough. Really? Really. I ask all of them the same thing, "Have you ever pulled the trigger at the wrong time?" They all tell me that they have, and some even confess to having a permanent dot or two in their vision from big screw ups with an arc welding torch. That's why I recommend that anyone interested in welding buy a proper welding helmet. It's an essential, yet very affordable, piece of equipment that can save something very precious -- your eyesight!

Bulb Replacement for Everyone
A turn signal bulb for your car or truck probably runs about $5, but if you pay the guys at the shop (or worse, at the inspection station) to replace it you'll be in for almost $20, maybe more. Why waste the extra $15 when you can replace your own bulb in just a few minutes using very common hand tools? Before you spend the money, check out this bulb replacement tutorial and get busy DIY style!

Quiet Those Raging Brakes!
If your brakes are screeching, squealing and wailing at you, they may be trying to tell you something. Brakes are designed to make noise when they are near the end of their useful life. In other words, if your brakes are whining you may be weeks or even days away from doing damage to your brake rotors. Install new brake pads today and avoid any more expense and embarrassment. You'll be glad you did.

A Growing Glossary
I'm putting together a glossary of welding and metalworking terms to try to help people who are just getting interested in doing automotive metal work. Sometimes it can be hard to stay focused with all of the specialized terms being thrown at you. Hopefully this glossary will be a decent go-to if you are doing some reading on welding, fabricating and other metal-related jobs. It will continue to grow as we see more information that needs to be added, so you can bookmark it and use it as a resource. Check out the Welding and Metalworking Glossary and start brushing up!

Is a Radiator Flush Essential?
Car repair is never short on areas of debate. The necessity of flushing your radiator annually is a biggie amongst car people. Old schoolers tend to think that flushing is a good idea to clean the cooling system and replenish the fluid with new stuff. Newer schools of thought are leaning toward a radiator flush being a waste of time unless a problem indicates a clog or other issue. I fall into the "better safe than sorry" category and flush my cooling system. Where are you on this issue?
